Fitbit Versa 3Įlizabeth II ascended to the U.K.’s throne in the aftermath of World War II, at a time when the monarchy had ceded much of its power to Parliament and the Prime Minister. And a YA fantasy wouldn't be complete without a morally bankrupt, albeit extremely attractive, villain (Ben Barnes). There's Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter) and his motley crew of mercenaries: Inej (Amita Suman), a confident spy Jesper (Kit Young), a sassy sharpshooter and Nina (Danielle Galligan), a feisty Heartrender. While Alina's coming-of-age is the heart of the show, it's the colorful cast of secondary characters that keep the blood flowing. There are, of course, men who try to manipulate her, kidnap her, and own her power for themselves as Alina learns to control her newfound abilities in order to save a wartorn Ravka. It follows the familiar beats of a typical Chosen One adventure, focusing on Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), a young cartographer who discovers she harbors extraordinary power at her fingertips. Such is the case with Netflix's Shadow and Bone, the live-action adaptation of Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse series. It's easy to lose yourself in the labyrinth of fantasy storytelling. Adapting a beloved franchise to another medium is never easy, but Arcane pulls it off, becoming a wild ride for League fans and novices alike. The animation is vivid, a mix of hand-painted backgrounds and computer-animated characters, where every scene is lush and beautifully rendered to reinforce a more textured, illustrated look. Arcane is a YA drama with a propulsive tension and a host of compelling secondary characters. Taken from the lore of League of Legends, Arcane finds orphaned sisters Vi (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) and Powder (voiced by Ella Purnell) on rival sides of a war between twin cities Piltover and Zaun. (For the record, longtime players of the game like the show, too.) The animated series is an origin story of sorts. That's what makes Arcane such an enjoyable watch: You don't have to be a League obsessive to fall in love with these characters. The only thing I know about LoL is that K/DA release bangers. I know you hate that word, but it's true.) Eric ( Ncuti Gatwa) ends Season 3 feeling more liberated, and more luminous, than ever before heartbroken Adam (Connor Swindells) is taking the steps toward self-discovery Maeve ( Emma Mackey) leaves Moordale for America, eschewing the mistakes of so many TV heroines before her who sacrificed their dreams for a boy and Otis (Asa Butterfield) finally releases the valve of his tightly wound emotions for some much-needed catharsis. It acknowledges that adolescence is painful and messy and exuberant, and that every setback is just another opportunity for personal growth. Despite its name, Sex Education is never didactic. But the true magic of this sex-positive series lies in its warmth. On the outside, it's a show about teens navigating sex and sexuality, character and identity, in a rural British town. In its third season, Sex Education officially solidified its place in the pantheon of teen shows.
